The Loop is, without question, one of the greatest amenities Tucson has to offer. Spanning over 131 total miles, this paved, multi-use trail system connects the North, East, South, and West sides of our city in one seamless circle.
Whether you are a cyclist, a runner, an inline skater, or just enjoy a quiet morning walk, The Loop offers a car-free environment to experience the best of the Sonoran Desert.
Currently, one of my favorite stretches is the Julian Wash section on the South side.
The Vibe: It’s peaceful, less crowded, and offers a unique “industrial-meets-desert” aesthetic.
The Trains: This section parallels the railroad tracks near Kolb and I-10. If you’re lucky, you can time your ride to race the trains as they move through the interchange near the new Amazon distribution centers.
The Scenery: It’s a fantastic spot for an early morning start to catch the sunrise over the unobstructed horizon.
The Loop isn’t just a circle; it’s a gateway to Tucson’s most famous landmarks:
“A” Mountain (Sentinel Peak): Located just West of downtown, this iconic landmark is easily accessible from the trail. It’s the perfect spot for a sunset detour to get a panoramic view of the downtown skyline.
Mount Lemmon: For those looking for an epic challenge, The Loop connects directly to the Catalina Highway. You can start at an elevation of 2,500 feet and climb to nearly 10,000 feet—one of the premier cycling climbs in the United States.
In recent years, homes with direct access to The Loop have become some of the most desirable properties in Tucson.
Desirability: Being “Loop-adjacent” is a major value-driver. Residents love the ability to commute or exercise without ever dealing with traffic.
Path of Progress: We are seeing a massive “path of progress” along the South and West sections of The Loop. Builders are following the trail, bringing new construction and modern communities to these previously vacant areas.
Hydration: Pima County has done an excellent job providing public restrooms and water stations at most major trailheads and parks.
Safety: The North section (between I-10 and Tanque Verde) is the most popular. If you’re traveling at higher speeds, keep a close watch for walkers and pets on leashes.
Navigation: Use the interactive Loop map to plan your entry points and find the best parking.
If you are riding The Loop clockwise for the first time, there is one specific section on the South Side that can be a bit tricky.
When you reach the area near Park Avenue and Ajo Way (by the VA Hospital), the dedicated path briefly ends and transitions into a mix of bike lanes and surface paths.
The Risk: If you haven’t done your homework, it’s very easy to lose the trail here.
The Solution: I highly recommend reviewing the interactive map before you head out. Look specifically at the interchange near the VA Hospital so you know exactly where to pick the path back up.
Blaine’s Pro-Tip: Don’t wait until you’re at the intersection to figure it out! A quick 30-second look at the map now will save you 20 minutes of back-tracking later.
If you have ever searched for a photo of Tucson, chances are you’ve seen “A” Mountain. Located just west of the downtown district, Sentinel Peak is the city’s most recognizable landmark and a favorite detour for those exploring The Loop.
“A” Mountain offers some of the most spectacular views in the Southwest. It is the premier spot for:
Sunset Vistas: As the sun dips behind the Tucson Mountains to the west, the city lights begin to glow, creating a perfect high-contrast scene.
Downtown Skylines: Drone pilots and photographers frequent this spot to capture the downtown high-rises with the rugged mountain landscape in the foreground.
The beauty of The Loop is its connectivity. Many cyclists use the trail as a “highway” to reach the city’s best rides.
The Ascent: There is a paved road that winds up the mountain directly from the trail area. It’s a short but rewarding climb that many riders use to cap off their evening workout.
The Reward: Reaching the top at golden hour provides a 360-degree view of the valley that makes the climb well worth the effort.
For many residents, The Loop is more than just a trail—it’s a lifestyle. Homes with direct access to this 131-mile network have become some of the most sought-after properties in the Tucson market. Whether you’re a serious cyclist or just enjoy a sunset stroll, being “Loop-adjacent” offers a level of connectivity that is hard to find anywhere else in the Southwest.
If you are looking for investment potential or a brand-new home, I always recommend following the Path of Progress. Currently, we are seeing a massive surge in development along the South and West sections of The Loop.
Why it’s Booming: These areas previously had more vacant land, and builders are now racing to meet the demand for modern communities with trail-side access.
Property Values: As these sections “blow up,” early buyers are seeing the benefit of getting into these emerging neighborhoods before they are fully established. View All listings within minutes of The Loop.
If you are exploring the North Section (the 20-mile stretch between I-10 and Tanque Verde), keep in mind that this is the most active part of the trail.
High Traffic: Because it runs through major residential hubs, you’ll find the highest density of walkers, runners, and families.
Blaine’s Pro-Tip: If you’re a cyclist training at higher speeds, stay extra vigilant in this section. Watch for pets on leashes and pedestrians who may not hear you approaching.
One of the best things about the partnership between the City of Tucson and Pima County is the incredible infrastructure they’ve built along the trail. You are never too far from a “pit stop,” which makes long-distance rides much more manageable.
Most major trailheads and parks along the 131-mile network are equipped with public restrooms and chilled water fountains.
Dual-Purpose Stops: Almost every location with a restroom also serves as a primary parking lot, giving you easy, safe access to jump on or off the trail.
The “Cool” Factor: Pima County maintains these facilities well, but in the peak of summer, having a planned stop can be a lifesaver.
If you’re moving to Tucson or visiting for the first time, don’t underestimate the Sonoran Sun. Even in the Spring and Fall, the dry air can dehydrate you quickly.
Hydrate Early: Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Make sure you’re drinking water consistently throughout your ride.
Sun Protection: High-SPF sunscreen is a must. There is very little shade on long stretches of the Rillito and Santa Cruz paths—apply it before you head out and reapply if you’re doing the full 54-mile loop!
Directly behind me is the majestic Mount Lemmon, and while the camera doesn’t quite do it justice, this is a “bucket list” climb for cyclists across the country.
One of the best features of The Loop is how it serves as a connector to these legendary rides. From the Tanque Verde section of the trail, you can head east to the Catalina Highway and begin the epic 30-mile ascent. You’ll start at an elevation of 2,500 feet and climb all the way to nearly 10,000 feet—truly one of the premier climbs in the United States.
Blaine’s Sunday Routine: Sundays are the big day for Mount Lemmon riders. A popular local tradition is to park near Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway, grab a coffee at Le Buzz, and then conquer the mountain.
I’ve put together a few essential links to help you plan your next adventure on the trail:
